Dates: TBD
Instruction in the application of various surface coatings/treaments (both materials and techniques) of unique and/or antique furniture/objects where wood is the substrate.
Based on my 20+ years of experience in running a woodworking business I have found that a balance between quality and speed must be achieved if the business is to survive. I have designed a course to teach skills that I use to actually make a living so that attendees can, in turn, do the same. In my restoration shop, working on actual pieces of furniture for clients, I will instruct students in the following:
Effective communication with the client/end user and assessment of the object's needs.
Development of a basic, but written, 'plan of action'.
Allocation/selection of materials.
Surface coating preparation or removal.
Loss compensation to both coating and wood substrate
Above will stress and demonstrate quick but effective inpainting/touch-up using shellac, dry pigments and dyes.
Various substrate compensation materials and techniques will be discussed/used.
Structural repairs will be addressed, but main focus will be on appearance related treatments.
All of the above will stress the need to do the best work possible in a pre-determined amount of time.
Student will be given a course book/binder at the beginning of the workshop that is theirs to keep.
Duration of Course: 5 days (Monday through Friday)
Cost: $1000
Materials Cost: TBD
Requirements:
Applicants must be currently employed (minimum 1 year) in a wood finishing trade that deals mainly with unique and/or antique furniture/wooden objects. This can be verified by, but not limited to, letter from employer on official letterhead.
